POSITION: Foods Systems Coordinator
HOURS OF WORK:Full time – 35 Hours per week
REPORTS TO: Community Support Manager
WAGE RANGE: $30/Hour

The Food Systems Coordinator under the direction of the Community Support Manager, is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating food systems programs for SȾÁUTW̱ First Nation. This position ensures that food security, traditional food and medicines are available in the community.
The Food Systems Coordinator plays a critical role in supporting healthy relationships with food for the best interests of SȾÁUTW̱ children and families. This role ensures that food security and traditional knowledge of medicinal plants is passed on to other SȾÁUTW̱ community members.
This position supports SȾÁUTW̱ First Nation’s vision for family preservation, cultural continuity, and community wellness by ensuring that SȾÁUTW̱ perspectives and rights are represented in all matters affecting children and families.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Community Food Systems Planning & Coordination

  • Support the development, implementation, and ongoing coordination of community food systems strategies.
  • Work with leadership, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to identify food security priorities.
  • Integrate traditional food knowledge, cultural practices, and local food sovereignty goals into planning and program delivery, in alignment with community protocols.
  • Coordinate initiatives that strengthen local food production, harvesting, sharing, and distribution networks.
  • Monitor and evaluate program goals, outcomes, and impacts to support effective, efficient, and accountable service delivery.
  • Maintain cooperative and timely communication with the Community Support Manager, bringing forward issues and recommendations for review and discussion.
  • Implement and uphold safety and well-being practices, including knowledge of universal precautions, emergency procedures, communicable disease protocols, and duty-to-report requirements.
  • Demonstrate strong organization, time management, accountability, reliability, and punctuality.
  • Conduct community and environmental assessments, where feasible, to identify emerging issues, service gaps, and opportunities to build community capacity.

Food Security & Access Programs

  • Design, implement, and oversee programs that improve access to healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate food.
  • Support food distribution initiatives such as community kitchens, food hubs, markets, or hamper programs, as directed by community priorities.
  • Identify and address barriers to food access within the community through outreach, coordination, and practical supports.
  • Collaborate with social service and wellness programs to support vulnerable populations and strengthen wraparound supports.

Community Engagement & Relationship Building

  • Engage with community members through workshops, consultations, surveys, and outreach activities to inform planning and continuous improvement.
  • Build strong working relationships with local growers, fishers, harvesters, schools, and service providers to strengthen food security and community wellness.
  • Facilitate community participation in food-related decision-making and support community-led solutions.
  • Support intergenerational learning opportunities related to food harvesting, preparation, and preservation, in alignment with community protocols.

Operational Management & Program Delivery

  • Maintain a safe and welcoming environment in program and office settings when community members visit.
  •  Follow health and safety policies and demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Integrate SȾÁUTW̱ culture, values, traditions, and teachings into programming where appropriate and in alignment with community protocols; ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and secure recordkeeping.
  • Coordinate volunteers, community participants, and partner supports to ensure programs and garden activities are well-organized and welcoming.
  • Coordinate program logistics, including purchasing, inventory, tools, supplies, and equipment maintenance, in line with budget and safety requirements.
  • Support safe food handling, storage, and distribution practices for harvested and donated foods, in accordance with applicable guidelines and community protocols.

Program Development & Implementation

  • Plan and deliver community food programs such as gardens, greenhouses, farm projects, seed-saving initiatives, and cooking programs, as appropriate.
  • Support food sovereignty initiatives, including traditional harvesting, fishing, hunting, and food preservation, where appropriate and in alignment with community protocols.
  • Develop culturally relevant programming that reflects community values, priorities, and seasonal activities.
  • Monitor program effectiveness and adapt programming based on community feedback and outcomes data.

Food Systems Capacity Building

  • Provide training and support to community members involved in food-related initiatives.
  • Build local capacity for food production, storage, preservation, and distribution.
  • Support youth engagement and skills development in food systems, agriculture, and land-based learning opportunities.
  • Encourage leadership development in community food initiatives by supporting mentorship and community participation.

Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship

  • Promote sustainable food production practices and environmental stewardship in program planning and delivery.
  • Support climate-resilient food systems planning and identify opportunities to strengthen long-term sustainability.
  • Integrate land-based learning and ecological knowledge into food programs, where appropriate and in alignment with community protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with Lands & Environment and other departments, where applicable, to align initiatives and responsibilities.

Partnerships & Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community members, Elders/Knowledge Keepers (as appropriate), local growers, food programs, and service providers to strengthen food security.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with government agencies, funders, nonprofits, and regional food networks to advance community priorities.
  • Coordinate collaborative projects with health, housing, education, social services, and other departments to support wraparound community wellness.
  • Liaise with vendors and partners to support timely procurement, donations, and in-kind supports, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Represent the program and community interests at relevant meetings, networks, and tables to advocate for community needs and identify opportunities for collaboration.

Funding Development & Reporting

  • Complete program documentation and funder reporting accurately and on schedule.
  • Prepare and provide program statistics and outcomes data, as required, to support funding applications and ongoing funding compliance.
  • Contribute to grant applications by gathering required information, drafting supporting content, and coordinating letters of support, as needed.
  • Maintain organized funding and partnership records, including agreements, deliverables, and reporting requirements, to support compliance and audits.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma in a related field (e.g., food systems, public health, nutrition, environmental science, or sustainable agriculture).
  • Two years of experience supporting community food systems through work in non-profit organizations, local government, food-related businesses, community food programs, or sustainable agriculture initiatives.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated understanding of local food systems, food security, and sustainable agriculture.
  • Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and build strong, respectful community relationships.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including facilitation and public engagement.
  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture and food systems to develop and manage community food projects.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Strong networking and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to use technology for data collection, analysis, and reporting to evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Must provide a clear Criminal Record Check, including the Vulnerable Sector.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in all aspects of work.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Combination of office-based work and external meetings with agencies and families.
  • Outdoor work in community garden
  • Occasional travel for meetings and events
  • Occasional evening or weekend work to meet community and organizational needs
